1898–1979
Founded the firm with Astrid Lindqvist in 1934 to represent families arriving in New York
Biography
Edwin Carrow founded the firm with Astrid Lindqvist in 1934. He practiced immigration law in Lower Manhattan for more than three decades.
He was born on the Lower East Side to parents who had arrived through Ellis Island, and was admitted to the New York bar in 1923.
He retired from practice in 1968 and remained a visitor to the office until shortly before his death in 1979.
Remembered
Edwin Carrow opened the firm's first office in 1934 with a desk, a telephone and Astrid Lindqvist as his partner. Their first clients were families trying to bring relatives to New York under the quota laws of the time.
In the years that followed he represented refugees, merchant seamen and families separated by war. Colleagues remembered him for answering every letter, in whatever language it arrived, and for finding someone who could read it.
He trained the attorneys who carried the firm through the changes of 1952 and 1965, and insisted that the firm practice one kind of law and practice it carefully.
His grandson, Harold Carrow, still practices at the firm.
