Family immigration and naturalization: marriage and family green cards, adjustment of status, citizenship
Biography
Tobias Achterberg leads the firm’s family immigration practice. He represents U.S. citizens and permanent residents bringing a spouse, parent or child to the United States, and people applying to become citizens.
Most of his cases are family petitions and the green card that follows, either through adjustment of status in the United States or an immigrant visa at a consulate abroad. He also prepares naturalization applications and certificates of citizenship for people who may already be citizens through a parent.
He prepares clients for their USCIS interviews and attends with them. When an application has a complication, such as a past overstay, an earlier marriage or a gap in records, he deals with it in the filing rather than waiting for the officer to ask.
He joined the firm in 2008 and became a partner in 2015. He grew up in Hamburg and New Jersey, and consults in English and German.
